Making of Deeper Than Blue

Deeper Than Blue was made by six students during their second year of the Humber Film and Television Production Program. At the beginning of the semester the idea for the film was pitched by director Devon Robertson and cinematographer Emily Mahu. Once pitched the film was voted to be one of the fourteen films that would be shot over four days in October.

The films structure changed several times over the shooting days as we realized we had to alter may things due to time.

We shot at Amanda Munday's house for two days and Amanda was very kind to let us film her family and her living space.

We were originally going to shoot in the studio at school but we figured shooting at her house would be more comfortable and create a home environment for Amanda and her husband Steve to be interviewed in.

The original cut was thirteen minutes long and was edited down from lots of long nights editing to eleven minutes.

During the post production process we had several crew meeting to discuss the score, sound effects, end credits and VFX.

As a crew we are incredibly proud of how much we have learned during the process of making this film and cannot wait for audiences to learn and be inspired by Amanda's touching and hopeful story.

Director's Message

As a filmmaker, storytelling only feels like a true accomplishment if there is something to be learned from it. Mental health is something that I have always felt passionate about and struggle with myself on a personal level. Seeing these issues, postpartum depression in particular, that affect so many families & individuals be so overlooked by society is devastating to watch unfold, too devastating to accept it. I teamed up with my colleague, Emily Mahu, to pitch the documentary and from that point forward, the proposal grew into a story. With Deeper Than Blue, it is my core hope that audiences will feel the same sense of hope that Emily and I felt from Amanda's story.
